In his talk, Dr Gupta discussed the potential role of large language models (LLMs) in revolutionizing healthcare in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). The talk explored the various benefits these technologies offer to patients, healthcare professionals, and the healthcare system at large, including improved diagnostic accuracy, personalized patient education, and streamlined administrative processes. He presented real-world use cases where LLMs have made tangible differences in resource-constrained healthcare settings. This talk also addressed the significant challenges and limitations facing the implementation of LLMs in such contexts including infrastructural deficiencies, the barrier posed by language diversity, socio-cultural nuances, and the risk of over-dependence on AI technologies. Finally, the talk discussed future considerations and a potential roadmap for the effective integration of LLMs into healthcare systems in LMICs while ensuring inclusivity, equity, and ethical use of AI in global healthcare.
