The event will take place on Monday, April 15th at 14:30 in the Amphitheatre "Eau" at the Manufacture des Tabacs (1 cour des cigarières).

Abstract

Combined with vision and proprioception, sensory inputs provided by the vestibule of the inner ear allow the human body to maintain static and dynamic balance. A dysfunction in the physiology of the vestibular system can lead to major attacks of vertigo and dizziness (as in Menière's disease), a public health problem that is poorly controlled in France. Today, there remains a lack of knowledge about the behavior of fine structures of the inner ear labyrinth, and a lack of understanding of the interactions between these fine structures and the fluids present. We are developing a method for characterizing membranous vestibular tissue and modeling a finite element model of the semicircular canal and utricle, in order to study the influence of anatomical changes and tissue properties on the physiology of the system.

news-15343 Tue, 23 May 2023 10:30:00 +0200 Seminar: Gender Biases and Peer-Review Funding Process /news/news/default-11008f4b18 Join HealthTech executive committee member and BETA professor Patrick Llerena for an online seminar organized in collaboration with the equality referents network. The presentation is for a general audience. Gender biases and peer-review funding process

This study seeks to draw connections between the grant proposal peer-review and the gender representation in research consortia. We examined the implementation of a multi- disciplinary, pan-European funding scheme— EUROpean COllaborative RESearch Scheme (2003–2015)—and the reviewers’ materials that this generated. EUROCORES promoted investigator-driven, multinational collaborative research in multiple scientific areas and brought together 9158 Principal Investigators (PI) who teamed up in 1347 international consortia that were sequentially evaluated by 467 expert panel members and 1862 external reviewers. We found systematically unfavourable evaluations for consortia with a higher proportion of female PIs. This gender effect was evident in the evaluation outcomes of both panel members and reviewers: applications from consortia with a higher share of female scientists were less successful in panel selection and received lower scores from external reviewers. Interestingly, we found a systematic discrepancy between the evaluative language of written review reports and the scores assigned by reviewers that works against consortia with a higher share of female participants. Reviewers did not perceive female scientists as being less competent in their comments, but they were negatively sensitive to a high female ratio within a consortium when scoring the proposed research project.

The event will take place on Tuesday, November 29th 2022 at 2:00 pm, Amphitheater Heikel (Faculty of Dental Surgery, 8 rue Sainte Elisabeth, 67000 Strasbourg).

Abstract

This PhD thesis consists in the development of a full-field quantitative elastography system for biological tissue imaging. A digital holography-based set-up was designed to access full-field phase images at each camera frame. Using this imaging system, two main approaches were used to generate stiffness images: transient elastography and noise-correlation elastography. These approaches were first tested on finite difference simulation images. Experimental images are presented on polymer samples with controlled optical and mechanical properties as well as on biological tissues.

This webinar, entitled "Lessons on the path from Code to Clinic", will feature Dr Yun Liu from Google Health.

Abstract

Inspired by the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve access to expert-level medical image interpretation, several organizations began developing deep learning-based AI systems for detecting diabetic retinopathy (DR) from retinal fundus images around 2015. Today, these AI-based tools are finally being deployed at scale in certain parts of the world, often bringing DR screening to a population lacking easy access to timely diagnosis. The path to translating AI research into a useful clinical tool has gone through several unforeseen challenges along the way. In this talk, we share some lessons contrasting a priori expectations (“myths”) with synthesized learnings of what truly transpired (“reality”), to help others who wish to develop and deploy similar medical AI tools.

Biography

Dr Yun Liu is a staff research scientist in Google Health. In this role he focuses on developing and validating machine learning for medical imaging across multiple fields: pathology, ophthalmology, radiology, and dermatology. Yun completed his PhD at Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology, where he worked on predictive risk modeling using biomedical signals, medical text, and billing codes. He has previously also worked on predictive modeling for nucleic acid sequences and protein structures. Yun completed a BSc in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University.

The event will take place on Thursday, September 22nd 2022 at 1:30 pm, room A301, Illkirch Campus.

Abstract

Current state-of-the-art deep learning methods are data-hungry approaches which require huge annotated data collections to perform well. Nevertheless, digital histopathology, like the other fields of the medical domain, is known for its scarcity of data. Moreover, considering the variations that can occur due to the staining process and staining protocols, already collected and annotated datasets can only be reused with limited success. Such stain variation represents a source of domain shift and significantly affects deep learning-based solutions in practice.  This thesis investigates the potential of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) in two directions for addressing these problems --- stain transfer to enable reusing already available data collections; and developing stain invariant solutions which would alleviate the need for additional data acquisition or annotations.

The seminar will be held at IHU Strasbourg, and can also be attended online.

Short biography

Dr Sandra Keller holds a PhD in Psychology and is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Visceral Surgery and Medicine, Inselspital Bern University Hospital.

Abstract

Surgery is a task that requires a high level of teamwork and coordination. Therefore, communication among team members in the operating room (OR) has a major impact on surgical quality and patient outcomes. In the last few years, our research team moved from observation of communication in the OR to interventions to improve communication in the OR. We developed and tested the StOP? protocol, an intraoperative briefing initiated by the leading surgeon with the aim to update the whole OR team during the operation on the current Status (St) of the operation, next Objectives (O), potential upcoming problems (P) and to encourage the team members to ask questions (?).

news-14522 Fri, 26 Aug 2022 14:00:00 +0200 Ph.D. defense - Lucas Werling (in French) /news/news/phd-defense-lucas-werling Lucas Werling, PhD student at ICube Laboratory, team SMH, will present his doctoral work entitled "Contribution à l’intégration d’une sonde aiguille haute résolution de spectroscopie localisée par Résonance Magnétique Nucléaire". The event will take place on Friday, August 26th 2022 at 2:00 pm, Amphitheater Grünewald, Hubert Curien Pluridisciplinary Institute (Cronenbourg campus, 23 rue du Loess).
